The Brady Bunch, no, the real one this time

When you travel places with three daughters and three sons and when it often surfaces that you are a blended family, you’d be surprised how often you hear the phrase, “oh, just like the Brady Bunch!” That is a great reference for those of us who are 40, less so for those of us who are six.

So, we decided it was time for the kids to see what all the fuzz was about. I found a website with old episodes of the Brady Bunch and we started watching them. We are now about midway through season one and they love them.Well, what’s not to love?! It has been fun for the kids to see shades of themselves in Bobby or Cindy or Marsha.

And I’d forgotten just what nuggets of goodness there were in the plots.  We have already seen one episode where Bobby questions whether his stepmom loves him as much as she loves her own kids, and one where the kids take sides with their bio-siblings. But we also saw one where Marsha nominated her step dad for Father of the Year.

These episodes have been great launching pads for conversations about situations that have or may come up in our own blended household. And while it is true that our situation is certainly not exactly like the Bradys (I think both Mike and Carol are widowed and not divorced) there are enough similarities to keep it interesting for all of us. So, I recommend other stepfamilies look into finding some of these episodes online or at a local video store. You might be surprised how many of the lessons are still valuable (if you can manage to get past the fashions.)

Now if only we had an Alice…

About bradybonusmom

I recently combined my family (me and my 7-yr old son) with another family (dad and five kids). Needless to say, this has thrown us into a whole new world. We look a lot like the Brady Bunch - except we don't have an Alice.
